utlubul = tuntut/order/find (dari Shaykh Google)
ilma = ilmu?
min = dari
lahd = liang lahad?
ila = hingga
lahdi = er..
erghhh limitednye language skills ku...

Pandai anak aku Nisak jaga cucu aku, pandai masak, pandai macam2 lagi :p
Sorry Opah, gurau jek!
:). Actually, KKL, the ahadith runs as utlubul 'ilma min al-mahdi ila al-lahdi': Tuntutlah ilmu dari buaian hingga ke liang lahad.
wallahu 'alam
Looks like nnydd beat me to giving the meaning of the phrase :) But then again, I don't think I'd have done a job as good as hers (his?)
p.s. DITH - That was some piece of translation work!
Yeeharr cayalah nnydd!!
Actually, al-mahdi in the ahadith here does not actually means buaian. Otherwise Imam Mahdi will be 'Imam Buaian' LOL!
The mim in mahdi causes it to be called ism maf'ul, denoting a place or a person acting. The root word of mahdi is hada, which means a deliverance/a gift. Hence the mahdi is actually the place where something is being delivered. So the more correct translation would be 'dari tempat lahir ke tempat mati'.
As to Imam Mahdi, that is because in him lies the 'huda': the guidance, which itself is a gift from Allah. The other way to see it is that in him Allah will send down/deliver the guidance. al-Mahdi is therefore a nick, not the actual name of the Imam!
Masha Allahu kana!
