Cambridge in my Heart: The Colleges

KING'S COLLEGE,
CAMBRIDGE

Motto: Veritas Et Utilitas, Truth and usefulness
Founded: In 1441 by King Henry VI
Mama Sarah's Brief Description of the College:
A constituent college to University of Cambridge.
Situated at King's Parade, probably the most visited college by tourists.
Its chapel and gatehouse have become popular landmarks of Cambridge.

Sarah at the Front Court
You will see many signs around the colleges like these;
"Please keep of the grass"
and
"The College and Grounds are private property.
Visitors are asked to be as quiet as possible and
to respect the privacy of those who live and work here"

The Chapel (from the Backs)

The Chapel (side view from the Front Court)
A flamboyant late Gothic design

Gibbs Building
Building begun in the 1700s and named after its architect.

The fountain through Gibbs Building
A classical facade of Portland stone, totally of
more humble and different style from the Chapel

The Fountain
surmounted by the statue of Henry VI, the 'boy king'.
Figures symbolising Religion and Learning.

TRINITY COLLEGE

Motto: Virtus vera nobilitas, Virtue is true Nobility
Founded: In 1546 by King Henry VIII
Mama Sarah's Brief Description of the College:
The largest and wealthiest college in Cambridge.
Among famous alumni of Trinity College was
Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727).

The Great Gate (Front view)
Claimed as the largest of all the college gates and the only entrance with two doors. One big and one small.
On the right of the photo was where they planted an apple tree, descended from Sir Isaac Newton home in Lincolnshire.

The statue on the gate was King Henry VIII, the founder of the college. His sceptre was replaced many years ago by a chairleg (yes, kaki kerusi). Myth said it happened as an undergraduate prank.

The Great Gate (Rear View)
Statues of King James I, flanked by his wife, Anne of Denmark, and his heir, Prince Charles (later King Charles I)

The fountain at the Great Court
Reputed to be the largest enclosed court in Europe. The court was 'rearranged' by Thomas Nevile, the master of the college in the 17th century to form a single court. He demolished some parts of the original building and relocated some; like The Clock Tower.

The Clock Tower
The clock acts as the stopwatch for the Great Court Run; running round the court (roughly 367m) in the length of time that it takes the Tower Clock to strike noon. The chimes lasted about 43 seconds.
The only people who have completed the run under 43 seconds were Lord Burghley in 1927, and Sebastian Coe who beat Steve Cram in a charity race in 1988.

Queen's Gate
Built in 1597 and with a statue of Queen Elizabeth I over the archway.

Hall
Also claimed as the largest of all college halls. Inside, there are potraits of college alumni including Thomas Neville and Isaac Newton. The hall is used daily for meals.

SAINT JOHN'S COLLEGE

Motto: Souvent me Souvient, I Often Remember
Founded: In 1511 by Lady Margaret Beaufort
Mama Sarah's Brief Description of the College:
My personal favourite college in terms of its architecture. The first college that built a college building (New Court) on the West side of the river. The college has two bridges connecting from the East side of the building to the West.

The Front Gate
Featuring some mythical animals

The Chapel
You will be astounded by the architecture. Designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, who was evidently influenced by the 13th century Sainte Chapelle in Paris.

Through a corridor of the Hall into the Second Court
Amar was 'released' for the first time from his stroller. And he was so eager to walk and tour by himself, when he fell off the ramp to his right.

Sarah posed for a photo, Amar was not bothered. He wanted to explore more.

Beautiful ceiling carvings just before crossing Bridge of Sighs

The New Court
The first college built on the west bank of the river.

A Gothic and romantic design, known in the College as the 'Wedding Cake'.

Opposite New Court is an open lawn and designated path leading to the garden.
If you can remember from above, lawns are strictly prohibited area. For the first time; at the end of our Cambridge visit, Sarah and Amar walked on the grass! Sarah and Amar listened to our strict warning and didn't step on the grass again.

See, they just ran on the specified path. They are good and obedient children.

At this college, we ran out of memory space on our camera. And there were 28 other colleges and places to visit! Next time, hopefully.
